The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) that sought the removal of the word 'socialist' from the Preamble of India's Constitution. The PIL wished the word be struck off on the grounds that it was not a part of the original Constitution Dr B R Ambedkar had drafted, but was added during the Emergency. The Preamble to the Constitution says, "We, the people of India, constitute ourselves as a sovereign, secular, socialist, democratic republic."
