New Delhi: Pakistani investigators probing the assassination of PPP leader Benazir Bhutto claim to have identified her alleged assassin, Pakistan’s official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said on Tuesday. The investigators, however, claim that the killer died in the incident.
The killer was said to be a resident of Swabi district of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan. Quoting a report by private TV channel ARY-One World, APP said, “the killer was clearly visible in different video recordings at the time of Benazir’s assassination.”
The investigators also conducted a raid at the residence of the alleged attacker immediately after he was identified.
Benazir's supporters have called for the formation of a UN committee with a broad mandate to investigate the former prime minister's assassination and the events leading up to the attack.
The PPP leader was killed on December 27 in an attack outside a campaign rally. The Pakistani government blamed the attack on Islamic militants and brought in Scotland Yard investigators to assist with their probe.
Benazir's opposition party said only an independent investigation can have any credibility to the probe.
Recently, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf had conceded that a gunman may have shot Benazir, but added that the opposition leader exposed herself to danger and bore responsibility for her death.
While speaking to CBS News Musharraf also said that his government did everything it could to provide security for Benazir.
Pakistan's government has maintained that Benazir died when she struck her head on a handle on her vehicle's sunroof – a contention widely derided in Pakistan where many people suspect Musharraf's government of complicity.
