San Francisco (California): When Vijay Boyapati met Republican hopeful Ron Paul for the first time he knew that was the person he wanted to see as America's next President.
Boyapati, an Australian-born Indian immigrant, was so impressed with Paul's credentials that he decided to quit a high-paying job at Google to campaign for Paul fulltime.
“I listened to him and I was surprised that anyone like him existed in Congress because he has a very strict constitutional point of view and he doesn't give special favours to anyone. It's very difficult to stay in power without giving favours. But I did the research and he's been voting the same way for 30 years and that really impressed me,” Boyapati said.
During the first meeting, Boyapati wrote a $2,300 cheque for Paul's campaign, the maximum amount allowed by law.
Next, he left his six figure salary at Google and launched 'Operation Live Free or Die,' a grassroots effort to reach out to voters about Ron Paul's message. He says trading his job to campaign was an easy decision.
“It was an easy decision. I tell my friends and family, there's nowhere I'd rather be, there's nothing else I'd rather be doing. In the end it was something I really wanted to do,” Boyapati said.
Paul is not seen as a viable contender in the Presidential race. He finished last in the Florida Republican primary and is not expected to do well on Super Tuesday.
But Boyapati argues Paul could still stir up the race and says if the Texas Congressman doesn't win the nomination, he won't vote for any other candidate.
Boyapati says he's in no hurry to look for another job and for the time being he is living off his savings. For now he has focused on the campaign. And he says in the next 24-48 hours there will be little sleep and a lot of campaigning.
